Local Leadership Media Office, Hadramawt Governorate:
In a dangerous escalation reflecting a reprehensible and unacceptable repressive approach, the military and security forces affiliated with the Al-Khanbashi authorities resorted to excessive and brutal force against peaceful demonstrators in the city of Mukalla. They met the crowds with a barrage of gunfire, employing various types of weapons, including heavy weapons, in a shocking scene that transformed the city into an open battlefield against unarmed civilians.
The sound of gunfire continued until late this evening, resulting in the deaths of two martyrs:
Omar Bahidra and Ahmed Ali Hilal Al-Mat'hani.
In addition, a number of people were wounded, including:
Osama Ahmed Bajama' and Ahmed Ashraf Al-Marfadi, in an initial count that is expected to rise.
The people of Hadramawt had taken to the streets this evening, Saturday, in a massive peaceful demonstration in response to a call from the local leadership of the Southern Transitional Council in the governorate, to express their rejection of the policies of guardianship and the imposition of will by force. The crowds moved peacefully and in an organized manner toward Freedom Square in Old Mukalla, before being met with heavy gunfire from security checkpoints reinforced by armored vehicles, particularly at the Martyrs Barjash and Bin Hammam Bridge.
Faced with this dangerous escalation, the demonstrators were forced to retreat toward "Our Decision is Our Own" Square and the Al-Sharj neighborhood. However, the forces continued to pursue and fire upon them, in flagrant violation of all laws and norms, exacerbating the panic among residents and turning the city into a scene of violence and chaos.
The demonstrators carried only South Yemeni flags and chanted peaceful slogans expressing their demands, affirming their support for the Southern Transitional Council and its leadership, represented by President Aidarus Qasim al-Zubaidi. They reiterated their commitment to restoring a fully sovereign South Yemeni state, from Al-Mahra in the east to Bab al-Mandab in the west, regardless of the challenges. They also emphasized their categorical rejection of any form of guardianship, asserting that the decision must rest solely with the people and that the era of imposed dictates is over.
The banners raised also expressed the solidarity of the people of Hadramawt with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and the Republic of Iraq, condemning the Iranian attacks and affirming their rejection of any aggressive policies that threaten the security and stability of the region.
In the face of this heinous crime, the Executive Committee of the Southern Transitional Council's local leadership in Hadramawt expresses its strongest condemnation of this repressive behavior, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the right to peaceful protest and a direct attack on the lives of citizens. It affirms that what occurred is a fully-fledged crime that will not be forgotten, and that those responsible will be held accountable sooner or later.
The local leadership extends its deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs, praying that God Almighty grant them His mercy and bestow a speedy recovery upon the wounded. It affirms that these sacrifices will only strengthen the resolve of the people of Hadramawt to continue on their path until they achieve their legitimate aspirations.
